Thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to attend parent conferences. It was wonderful getting to know all of you, and I look forward to continuing to build a strong home-school connection to support your child throughout the year. Looking Back: Literacy: Grammar: Students began exploring adjectives this week. They learned what adjectives are and practiced identifying them in sentences. They also moved around the classroom in a Scoot style activity, reading different sentences and spotting the adjectives in each one. Novel Study: We continued reading Ollie’s Odyssey and following the adventures of Billy and Ollie, including meeting some mysterious new characters called the Creeps. Ask your child who the Creeps are, how they come to life, and who created them. Students also continued learning about forming opinions. After reading, they answered the question, Do grown-ups remember their favourite childhood toys, and supported their opinions with clear reasons. At home, please s...

Looking Back: We enjoyed spending our day at Heritage Park!  Hopefully, your child shared their experiences with you.  Here are some pictures of our experiences there! Literacy: Phonics: Students continue to solidify their understanding of vowel teams and have been practicing recognizing the need when writing.  Novel Study: We continued reading  Ollie’s Odyssey  and the adventures of Billy and Ollie.  This week, Billy and Ollie explained their "illegals" (rules) in their home.  Crossing the street without an adult is "highly illegal", for example.  Students then related the text to themselves by sharing some of their rules in their homes.  They then tried to imagine or understand the reason why their parents would have these rules.  They wrote some of their rules and explained why these rules are important to follow. Writing : We completed a writing assessment that will be shared during conferences. Students were given a picture p...

Looking Back: This week was only a day and a half, but we were still able to explore several areas of learning. We began with literacy by reviewing vocabulary that we have been working on throughout the year. In grammar, we learned about verbs and discovered that there are both physical and mental verbs. Students completed a scoot activity where they identified verbs in different sentences posted around the classroom. This page went home, so you will be able to see what they learned. In math, we learned how to compare numbers up to the millions place. Students practiced creating two sets of five-digit numbers on their whiteboards and then compared them. Ask your child to show you how we compared the numbers. In science, we explored what soil is made of. Ask your child if they can tell you the four components of soil: air, water, minerals, and organic matter. We also completed a layers of the soil experiment using food items to represent each layer. Students created humus with ...

Looking Back: Literacy: We began our week learning about Día de los Muertos during our literacy block. Students read an informational passage and used highlighters to carefully find key details. Using what they learned, they filled in a graphic organizer showing what happens on each of the three days of the celebration. To wrap up our learning, students created beautiful sugar skull art pieces. They followed a guided drawing, then added their own creative touches inspired by traditional sugar skull designs. After outlining their drawings with glue, they sprinkled sugar on top to make it sparkle, adding a touch of glitter at the end for extra flair! Oral Storytelling:   We have begun our oral storytelling unit, which connects beautifully with our social studies learning about treaties and treaty stories. Students discovered that Indigenous cultures have long used oral storytelling to pass knowledge, traditions, and history from one generation to the next. To explore t...
