Happy New Year!!! Looking Back: Literacy: Phonics: Students continued exploring affixes this week. Our focus was on the suffixes -ly, -y, and -er , and how they can change the meaning of a base word. We played with familiar words, added these suffixes, and noticed how the words transformed in both meaning and sound. Novel Study/Reading: Our journey through Ollie’s Odyssey is continuing, and we are taking our time so we can use the story to support our reading focus. Last month we worked on predicting. In January our focus has shifted to sequencing. Students are learning how to retell stories in order and are practicing using sequencing words such as first, next, then, after that, and finally. We have been working with short passages, including sequencing the steps to build a snowman. Students have also sequenced important events from the chapters of Ollie’s Odyssey we have read.   We had a fun time caroling this week.   Looking Back: Literacy: There will not be a Friday Letter this week as our Friday was full of Grinch day, story with Dr. Slater, buddy time with our Kindergarten buddies and buddies with our Grade 1 friends. Novel Study: This week, we dove into Ollie’s Odyssey and explored the building blocks of a great story. It has been exciting to hear their ideas and reasoning as the adventure continues. At home, ask your child what has happened so far in Ollie’s Odyssey . See if they can explain who the characters are, where the story takes place, and what problem Ollie is facing. It is a great way to reinforce our learning and spark some storytelling fun. The students have been crafting their own persuasive letters, and their finished work will be coming home next week. They cannot wait for you to read what they created. We began our journey by brainstorming possible audiences. Students chose someone special they wanted to convince (mom, dad, teacher, Santa, elves, aunties etc.), which led to many lively conversations about who might be most likely to say yes. From there, they selected a topic they felt passionate about. Some students chose practical ideas, while others dreamed big, which made for wonderfully imaginative planning sessions. To build strong arguments, students developed three or four reasons to support their idea. They then stretched their thinking by coming up with three counter reasons, imagining what someone might say in response and preparing thoughtful ways to address those c...
