Looking Back: Literacy: Poetry: Students have been learning about Haiku poetry.  A haiku is a short, three-line poem that captures a moment using vivid language and imagery. It follows a simple syllable pattern of 5 7 5 and often focuses on nature or everyday experiences. Students have been learning how to create their own haiku poems by drawing inspiration from nature and their personal experiences. They did a very good job, and I was truly impressed with the creativity and thoughtfulness they showed in their work.  It has been lovely having students come back to school showing me some of the poems they chose to write at home! Government Assessments: Students have been working one-on-one with me this week, completing both math and literacy assessments that the government has asked us to complete 2-3 times a year.   Writing : Please read your child’s Friday Letter book, as they really enjoy reading what you have written.   Looking Back: Literacy: Grammar: We spent some time learning about adverbs this week. Students watched a video that explained what adverbs are and how to identify them in a sentence. I have posted an activity in Google Classroom that includes the video link and a few games students can play to help reinforce their understanding of adverbs. Novel Study/Reading: We continued reading Ollie’s Odyssey this week. You may be wondering why we have spent so much time with the same book, so I wanted to explain. The book is a wonderful resource that helps reinforce many important reading strategies and supports students’ literacy learning. We read only one or two chapters each week and use the story to guide rich discussions about skills such as inferencing, making connections, visualizing, summarizing, predicting, and more. This week our focus was on summarizing. I read a chapter aloud, and students worked together to identify the main events and organize them in the correct order. This h...

Happy New Year!!! Looking Back: Literacy: Phonics: Students continued exploring affixes this week. Our focus was on the suffixes -ly, -y, and -er , and how they can change the meaning of a base word. We played with familiar words, added these suffixes, and noticed how the words transformed in both meaning and sound. Novel Study/Reading: Our journey through Ollie’s Odyssey is continuing, and we are taking our time so we can use the story to support our reading focus. Last month we worked on predicting. In January our focus has shifted to sequencing. Students are learning how to retell stories in order and are practicing using sequencing words such as first, next, then, after that, and finally. We have been working with short passages, including sequencing the steps to build a snowman. Students have also sequenced important events from the chapters of Ollie’s Odyssey we have read. Writing : In writing, we drew inspiration from our winter break. Students wrote about memorable moments an...
