Looking Back:

Literacy:

Poetry:

Students have been learning about Haiku poetry.  A haiku is a short, three-line poem that captures a moment using vivid language and imagery. It follows a simple syllable pattern of 5 7 5 and often focuses on nature or everyday experiences. Students have been learning how to create their own haiku poems by drawing inspiration from nature and their personal experiences. They did a very good job, and I was truly impressed with the creativity and thoughtfulness they showed in their work.  It has been lovely having students come back to school showing me some of the poems they chose to write at home!

Government Assessments:

Students have been working one-on-one with me this week, completing both math and literacy assessments that the government has asked us to complete 2-3 times a year.

Writing:

Please read your child’s Friday Letter book, as they really enjoy reading what you have written. As you may have noticed, we have been focusing on understanding what indenting is and how to apply it in our letters. I have loved seeing some of you respond and include proper indenting in your messages. Thank you for your continued support.

Math:

In math this week, students completed the government assessments and continued to build their multiplication skills by focusing on the 3s facts. They practiced applying repeated addition and repeated subtraction strategies to deepen their understanding and strengthen their problem-solving skills.

Social Studies/ Science:

Students finished building all of their landmark and landform models, which they used to code their robot for the Journey Through Alberta coding task. They successfully completed coding all three stops and strengthened their problem-solving skills as they worked through challenges that arose along the way. On Thursday, students began presenting their Journey Through Alberta to the class. Those who presented were able to bring their 3D landmark and landform models home.

Art:

Students learned about the artist Wassily Kandinsky and explored several of his unique works. Through this, they discovered what abstract art is and how artists can use shapes, lines, and colours to express ideas and emotions. Using this knowledge, students created their own Kandinsky-inspired art pieces. We then used small cards to share and celebrate their creative creations with one another.

Looking Ahead:

Food Support

Did you know that the Breakfast Club of Canada has shared research demonstrating that 40% of Alberta’s children experience food insecurity?  This means that 4 out of 10 children do not have access to food when they are hungry.

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.

Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
