Thank you for joining us for our sharing assembly today. The students worked hard and they did a great job.
Inline Skating:
Students are asked to bring their own helmet (with a safety certification sticker attached e.g., CSA, CPSC, etc.) and remind all participants to wear socks. Due to health reasons, students without socks will not be permitted to participate. We recommend suggesting that students bring an extra pair of socks to help keep the equipment dry and for the participant’s personal comfort.
- Acceptable helmets include: bicycle helmets, hockey helmets (no cage), skateboard helmets, ski/snowboard helmets.
- The following helmets are not appropriate for inline skating: BMX helmets, baseball helmets, football helmets, equestrian helmets, motorcycle helmets, any helmet with no chin strap, any helmet that covers the face, any helmet missing its outer plastic shell.
Looking Back:
Literacy:
Writing: Students worked on editing sentences this week using MINTS. This is an acronym to help students remember which letters get capitalized in a sentence.
Phonics: The students practiced phonics games in the Google Classroom. They learned how to break up a word into its phonemes (or sounds) to support spelling practices.
Novel: Ask your child how our "How to be Cool in the 3rd Grade" novel ended. I think I have a very "cool" group of 3rd graders!!! We began a new book called "Ollie's Odyssey," where we practiced making text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections. Students were invited to bring in their "favourite" toy or a picture of it to class on Thursday. This is where we began to make visual comparisons, which will lead us into our October reading focus of visualizing.
Vocabulary: This week, we learned a few new words to add to our "Word Collector" page in our literacy notebook. These words include: indulgent, velvety, impeccable, innovative, and
Cursive: The students learned how to write the lowercase d. I have updated our Google Classroom, which has videos that help students practice.
Math:
You may have noticed that your child has come home with a few practice pages for time. Some of these pages may not be completed. This is a good opportunity to work at home to practice with the students. These are additional pages from what we have done in class.
This week, students were introduced to time in terms of past and to the next hour, and the 24 hour clock. Both of these concepts are the most challenging part of our time unit. Please have a conversation at home with your child, helping them reinforce these concepts. We will continue to work through this to reinforce understanding throughout the year.
Social Studies:
-Students learned about the word reconciliation and added some words that they thought of on how they can move forward.
-We continued learning about our place on the map. Students began exploring their province and their country.
-The students had some time working with Ms. Olson, learning about landforms of Alberta.
Science:
Students began exploring rapid changes to the Earth’s surface. We started with a game of What Am I?, where they listened to clues about different natural disasters and tried to guess which one was being described. Afterwards, students worked in five groups, each focusing on a specific natural disaster (such as floods, landslides, hurricanes, volcanoes, or blizzards). They read informational texts, created jot notes, and gathered key facts about their topic. Their notes were recorded on chart paper, which Ms. Olson’s class added to later in the week.
A number of families still need to complete their Demographic Verification Forms on their CBE Account.
It is a legal requirement from Alberta Education for funding purposes for every family to complete these forms.

Orange Shirt Day
Tuesday, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. All CBE schools will be closed.
Alien In-Line Volunteers Needed
Alien In-Line skating is back this year! This is for students in grades 3 & 4 as well as EES classes. We need Grade 3 and 4 parents to help students with sizing, getting their skates and safety equipment on and off, and helping struggling skaters.
Mr. V is looking for 1 - 2 volunteers for each time slot. There are two availabilities per slot in the event a parent can only stay for the time their child is skating, but we welcome parents to stay for the full time or sign up for multiple slots. Attached is a tentative class schedule so volunteers are aware of their child’s skate time.
