Week of September 19, 2025
✨ Reading Reminder! ✨
Keep up the great daily reading! Don’t forget—all Laser City reading pages need to be in the box by October 1 for a chance to win. 📚🎉 Each month, 5 lucky readers will be drawn to enjoy a FREE game of laser tag! If your child’s name isn’t chosen this time, encourage them to keep reading—their turn could be next! 🔦💥. (I am looking for at least half the books to be storybooks. The other half can be graphic novels).
Assembly
The Grade 3 students will be leading the Orange Shirt Day assembly on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. We warmly invite you to join us for this special assembly, where students will share what we have been working on to honour this day.
This will be a whole-school assembly, with parents welcome to sit in the chairs at the back to watch their child participate. We kindly ask that students wear an orange shirt on this day to honour the occasion.
If you have any questions about the assembly, please contact lncoleman@cbe.ab.ca.

Literacy:
Cursive: This week, we practiced the lowercase q.
Writing:
-
We learned about the four types of sentences. Ask your child if they can explain what exclamatory, interrogative, declarative, and imperative sentences are, and if they can give you an example of each.
-
Students also worked on their Friday letters. Please take some time to read your child’s letter about their week. They truly enjoy reading your responses.
Phonics: We explored affixes, focusing on what a root word is and how a prefix can change its meaning.
Novel Study: Ask your child to share what happened this week with our main character, Robbie.

Math
We learned about seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, and years, and made comparisons between them.
-
Students completed the Government of Alberta’s numeracy assessment.
-
We practiced manipulating clocks by matching digital times to analog times. This is an important Grade 3 concept, so please continue to reinforce this learning at home.
-
We also played a game called Race to the Hour. Ask your child to explain how to play!

Science
In science, we began our new Earth Systems unit by reading The Street Beneath My Feet. Students also created a title page for their Earth Systems learning.
We started at the street level to explore how the Earth has changed over time. Students visited a sit spot where they sketched what the land might have looked like before people developed it with homes, streets, cars, and buildings. They then drew what they currently see with all the development.
To deepen their thinking, students made jot notes about how the land has changed over time. Together, we considered important questions: Are these changes all good? What is missing from the land that might have been there if there hadn’t been so much development?
Social Studies
In social studies, we began working on a project called My Spot on the Map. Students started by locating their own home and then their city, learning how maps can show places that are familiar to them.
From there, we zoomed out to a larger scale and began learning about the continents. Students completed a map highlighting each continent and practiced identifying where they are in relation to one another.
To help with remembering the continents, we learned a song together. Ask your child if they can sing it for you—see how many continents they can name!

Ways to support your child:
It was wonderful to meet so many of you at the open house last week! Several parents asked how they can support their child’s learning at home, so here are a few ideas:
-
Reading: Encourage your child to read every day, ideally reading aloud to help strengthen fluency and confidence.
-
Math: Try practicing addition and subtraction facts regularly with your child, including adding and subtracting double digits, to help strengthen their regrouping skills. You can also make skip counting fun by practicing in the car or during everyday activities to help build a foundation for multiplication.
-
Google Classroom: I have set up our class Google Classroom to provide interactive games and activities that reinforce the concepts we cover in class. Some students experienced computer glitches this week and were not able to join yet, but we will ensure everyone gets connected soon.
These activities are meant to make learning at home fun and engaging while supporting the skills we are building in the classroom.
Looking Ahead:
