We had a fun time caroling this week.   Looking Back: Literacy: There will not be a Friday Letter this week as our Friday was full of Grinch day, story with Dr. Slater, buddy time with our Kindergarten buddies and buddies with our Grade 1 friends. Novel Study: This week, we dove into Ollie’s Odyssey and explored the building blocks of a great story. Students practiced identifying the characters , setting , and problem , becoming story detectives as they searched for important clues in the text. We have not uncovered the solution yet, so students have been making thoughtful predictions about how the story might unfold. It has been exciting to hear their ideas and reasoning as the adventure continues. At home, ask your child what has happened so far in Ollie’s Odyssey .   Looking Back: Literacy: There will not be a Friday Letter this week because our classroom has been buzzing with a very exciting project.   Looking Back: Literacy: Phonics: Our phonics focus this week was a review of r-controlled vowels. Students practiced decoding nonsense words to build accuracy and confidence. We also introduced the prefixes in , de and non . Students searched for words with these prefixes in the stories they read each day. Please continue to look for these affixes when reading together at home. Reading: Our December focus is on predicting. This week we practiced making predictions every day using short clips from Americas Funniest Home Videos. Students watched part of a clip and then predicted what they thought would happen next. We also worked with holiday scenarios where students explained their predictions, shared the reasons for their thinking, and drew a picture to match their ideas. Novel Study: We carried our predicting focus into our read aloud, Ollies Odyssey . In this part of the story, we learned that Ollie was taken after Billy convinced his parents to let him bring Ollie to the wedd...
