Week of October 31, 2025

Looking Back:

Even though it was a short week, we accomplished a lot and picked up right where we left off with enthusiasm!

Literacy:

Phonics:

Students have been exploring vowel teams and working to solidify their understanding. This can be quite challenging! Ask your child which vowel teams they learned this week and how many ways those vowel sounds can be decoded.

Novel Study:
We revisited Ollie’s Odyssey and the adventures of Billy and Ollie. The class was excited to dive back in! In September, our focus was on making connections (text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world). For October and November, we’re shifting to visualizing—creating a “movie in the mind” while reading. This skill strengthens comprehension, retelling, and character analysis.

Typing:
We continue to build typing fluency. Please encourage your child to log into Google Classroom at home to keep practicing. Strong typing skills will help them feel more confident with digital tasks as the year continues.

Math:
We were fortunate to finish our unit on time before the strike and have now begun exploring place value. In Grade 2, students worked with numbers up to 1,000, but in Grade 3, we expand that understanding all the way to the millions.

Students have been using place value charts to support their learning and have practiced placing numbers up to 100,000. They also enjoyed a partner game where they rolled dice to create the largest number possible, an engaging way to strengthen their understanding of digit value and number sense.

Social Studies:
We began exploring treaty stories and read two stories, Napi and the Dogs and Ne Îethka Makochî Chach. These stories introduced us to Treaty 7 history and the land we live on. Students made personal connections by identifying animals, places, or activities from the stories that they have experienced, such as camping or berry picking. They drew a picture to represent their connection and then shared their reflections in a class sharing circle.

Science:
We began exploring slow changes to the Earth's surface, focusing on erosion and deposition. Students participated in a sugar cube experiment to see how wind, water, and ice can shape landforms. They then used computers to research landforms created by these gradual processes. Ask your child which landforms they investigated.

Buddies:

We were lucky on Halloween to spend time with both our Grade 1 and Kindergarten buddies. With our Grade 1 friends, we created torn paper pumpkin crafts, and with our Kindergarten buddies, we read Creepy Pair of Underwear before designing our own spooky underwear! It was a fun and creative time for everyone.

Looking Ahead:

Picture day has been rescheduled for Tuesday morning. Our class will be one of the first to have our photos taken, so please make sure your child is ready!
