Inline Skating:

We have had 2 sessions of inline skating so far.  The students have been thoroughly enjoying it.
Coming Up: Inline Skating in the Gym!
We're excited to let you know that Alien Inline Skating will be starting a residency in our gymnasium for Grades 3, 4 and EES students starting Wednesday, October 1st.  This is a fantastic opportunity for students to build confidence, coordination, and have a ton of fun while learning to inline skate.
A few important notes for skating days:
  • Students are encouraged to bring a CSA-approved helmet (bike helmets are best).  I will post the schedule so you know what days to bring in helmets.
  • Please do not send full-face helmets, football helmets, or hockey helmets.
  • If your child does not have a helmet, one will be provided for them.
Since the gym will be used for skating, all PE classes will continue to be held outdoors next week, weather permitting. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather and ready to move!

Looking Back:

Literacy:

Phonics:     We explored suffixes this week.  This week, our students became word detectives as they explored prefixes and suffixes. They went on a hunt through their books to find root words and identify which ones had prefixes at the beginning or suffixes at the end. Through this activity, they discovered how words change when something is added—for example, how hope becomes hopeful or how unhappy means the opposite of happy. While they are just beginning to recognize root and base words along with their affixes, this will be an ongoing skill we continue to practice. It’s exciting to see their curiosity grow as they realize that learning about prefixes and suffixes gives them “reader superpowers” to figure out unfamiliar words and expand their vocabulary.

Novel:    This week, we continued reading our novel Ollie’s Odyssey and focused on the reading strategy of visualizing. Students brought in their own favorite toys or stuffed animals and practiced “creating a picture in their mind” to imagine what Ollie might look like. Afterward, they drew a picture of their own favorite and then used a Venn diagram to compare and contrast their special toy with Ollie. This activity not only encouraged creativity and deeper engagement with the story but also helped students make meaningful connections between the text and their own lives.

Cursive:    The students learned how to write the lowercase i.

Math:

This week, students reviewed all the concepts we’ve learned in our Time unit. They enjoyed practicing their skills through computer games available in Google Classroom, which made reviewing both fun and interactive. On Thursday, students completed their Time assessment, and next week we will begin our Place Value unit.

I encourage you to continue practicing double-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping at home. In Grade 3, this is considered a review skill from Grade 2, so we don’t spend a great deal of time on it. Building confidence with this now will help your child feel more comfortable as we move into adding and subtracting with larger numbers, including the hundreds and thousands place.

Science:

Students each selected three natural disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, blizzards, avalanches, or tsunamis.  They researched them using books and videos. They used their discoveries to begin creating “Did You Know?” fact cards filled with interesting information they can’t wait to share. They will finish these cards when we return to class. Be sure to ask your child which three natural disasters they chose to research and what surprising facts they’ve learned so far!

Social Studies:

Students continued their exploration of Alberta’s diverse landforms this week, building on the introduction they began last week. They extended their learning by plotting the locations of these landforms on a map and discovering the natural resources found in each area. This hands-on activity helped students make connections between Alberta’s physical geography and the resources that support communities and industries across the province.

Looking Ahead:
