Looking Back:

Literacy:

We began our week learning about Día de los Muertos during our literacy block. Students read an informational passage and used highlighters to carefully find key details. Using what they learned, they filled in a graphic organizer showing what happens on each of the three days of the celebration.

To wrap up our learning, students created beautiful sugar skull art pieces. They followed a guided drawing, then added their own creative touches inspired by traditional sugar skull designs. After outlining their drawings with glue, they sprinkled sugar on top to make it sparkle, adding a touch of glitter at the end for extra flair!

Oral Storytelling:  We have begun our oral storytelling unit, which connects beautifully with our social studies learning about treaties and treaty stories. Students discovered that Indigenous cultures have long used oral storytelling to pass knowledge, traditions, and history from one generation to the next.

To explore this idea, students created timelines of their own lives, from birth to the present, highlighting meaningful events along the way. They then represented each event with a bead, creating a visual and oral story of their personal journey. On Friday, we celebrated by sharing these stories with classmates, honouring the tradition of storytelling and the power of sharing our own experiences.

Cursive: Students learned the lowercase letter t this week.

Writing: Take some time to reply to your child's Friday letters.  They have been working hard to add details to their letters.

Math:

This week in math, we explored place value all the way up to the hundred thousands! Students had a great time showing numbers in different ways, using base ten blocks, expanded form, and written form. They even got to build and manipulate base ten blocks on the computers, which made the learning extra engaging. To wrap it up, we played a fun Place Value Yahtzee game that helped everyone practice their skills while having a blast!

Science:

In science this week, we took a trip to the Alberta Badlands right from our classroom! Students learned all about this fascinating landscape and how wind and water slowly shape it over time. We explored the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition, discovering how each one changes the surface of the Earth. After our discussions, students created colourful visuals in their visual journals to show what they had learned and drew their own artistic pictures of the Badlands. It was a fun and creative way to connect science, art, and imagination!

Social Studies:

In social studies this week, students learned all about treaties. We discussed what a treaty is and what it means to be treaty people. Students explored what life was like for Indigenous communities before European settlers arrived, what changed when settlers came, and how life continued after treaties were signed. To bring our learning to life, we made bannock together, connecting our classroom discussions to an important part of Indigenous culture and tradition. It was a meaningful and delicious way to deepen our understanding!

Looking Ahead:

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place in person at the school on Thursday, November 27 from 3:30pm - 7:30pm and Friday, November 28 from 8:00am to 12:00pm.

Parents will book conference times through their CBE account. Conference bookings will open on Saturday, November 22 at 8:00am and closes on Thursday, November 27 at 2:00pm.

If parents require support with bookings, they can call the office.

This will give families an opportunity to sign IPP's and Behaviour Support Plans.

These conferences are the opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and to provide teachers with information about your child that is important. Teachers will inform you on how your child is adapting to and settling into the new school year but, due to the minimal amount of time spent in school thus far, will not provide information on student learning or achievement.

The next Fun Lunch will be held on Wednesday November 26.

Fun Lunch is only for grades 1-4 and our EES students.
