Week of March 13, 2026

Looking Back:

Literacy:

Grammar:

This week, we learned about possessive nouns and how they show ownership. Students practiced deciding when to use ’s and when to use s’. To make the learning active and fun, we played a Scoot game, where students moved around the room solving different possessive noun challenges.

You can try a quick practice at home by asking your child questions such as:
How would you write the possessive form for “the bed belonging to the cat”?
How would you write the possessive form for “the art belonging to the students”?

See if they can explain why they chose ’s or s’

Writing:

We have finally finished our Creep/Junkyard Friend writing project! The students are very excited to share their work with you. During conferences, they will read their descriptions and challenge you to draw their creep based only on their writing. It will be a fun way to see how clearly they described their creation!

Reading:

This week in our novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class, students discovered the reason why Ahmet has not been joining the other students during recess and lunch. This had been a big mystery in our story, and students were very curious to learn more about his situation.

We also continued practicing the Five-Finger Summary strategy to help us retell what we read. Students used the prompts Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then to organize the key events from the chapter and strengthen their understanding of the story.

Math:

This week in math, students continued learning about measurement, with a focus on the imperial
system. We explored the units inches, feet, and yards and practiced estimating and measuring
using these units.

Students participated in a hands-on activity where they designed and built marble race tracks.
While building their tracks, they measured the length of different sections using imperial units
and practiced estimating distances before measuring.

We also discussed how metric and imperial units relate to one another and why understanding
both systems can be helpful in real-life situations. Students learned that sometimes we need to
approximate conversions between systems when measuring objects or distances in everyday life.
These activities helped students see how measurement is used in practical and creative ways.

Science:

In science this week, students continued exploring Rube Goldberg machines and simple

machines. We discussed how a Rube Goldberg machine completes a simple task through a chain

reaction, where energy transfers from one object to another.

Students planned and began building their Leprechaun traps, using their understanding of simple

machines and chain reactions to design creative traps.

Most of the building took place in the classroom, and students have been very excited to test

their ideas and see how their designs work.

Please remember to send your child’s trap to school on Monday, as this will be our final building

day. Traps will then be sent home on Monday, March 16.

Social Studies:

In Social studies this week, we learned about the difference between immigration and emigration.  Students

This week in social studies, students began learning about renewable and non-renewable resources. Our focus this week was on renewable resources and how they are used in Alberta.

Students learned that renewable resources are resources that can be naturally replenished over time, such as wind, water, and sunlight.

To explore this concept, students built their own wind turbines and tested them using a fan. This

activity helped them see how wind energy can be used to generate power. Students also learned

about places in Alberta where renewable energy is used. Through this activity, students began to understand how natural resources can influence energy

production and economic development in Alberta.

Looking Ahead:

Thank you for sending in supplies for our Leprechaun Rube Goldberg project.  We will be adding to them this next week, so check with your child to see if any additional supplies are needed.  These will be sent home with your child on Monday, March 16, so the students can use them at home.

During Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, we invite families to place a colourful push pin on our world map located in our Learning Commons to show where their family comes from. Together, we’ll create a vibrant picture celebrating the diverse backgrounds that make up our school community!
