Week of April 10, 2026
Looking Back:
Literacy:
Grammar:
Students learned about capitalizing titles. They practiced this skill through an activity where they applied their knowledge to correctly capitalize different book titles.
Reading:
This week in our novel study, students explored the skill of inferencing. They learned how to use clues from the text, along with their own background knowledge, to better understand what is happening in the story.
We continued reading The Boy at the Back of the Class and practiced making inferences using sentences from different chapters. Students worked to think beyond the words on the page, using evidence and their thinking to draw meaningful conclusions about the characters and events in the novel.
Writing:
This week in math, students continued learning about polygon properties and reinforced their understanding by creating polygon trading cards. Students also learned about perimeter and how to calculate the perimeter of polygon shapes. They applied their prior knowledge of addition, including regrouping (borrowing), to solve perimeter problems.
Science:
In science, students learned about the pulley system. They explored how pulleys work by using pulley building kits to lift different objects such as water bottles, markers, and pencils, and compared the effort required.
Students also learned about wedges by designing and testing paper airplanes. This hands-on activity helped them apply their understanding of how wedges can change movement and direction.
Social Studies:
This week in social studies, students explored Alberta’s protected parks and connected their learning to The Lorax. Students discussed sustainability and how we can care for the environment.
As part of this learning, students began planting their own plants (sunflowers) to represent how small actions can help protect nature. They also created “Protect the Parks” posters to show their understanding of why conservation is important.
Health:
In health, our focus was on respect and kindness. Students explored concepts such as equality and discrimination and discussed ways they can show kindness and help others feel a sense of belonging in the classroom, school, and community.
Looking Ahead:
Field trip forms were sent home on Thursday. Although a due date was not listed on the form, please return them by April 23, 2026, so we can ensure we have the correct number of tickets. Thank you!
