Week of May 29, 2026

Here are a few important updates for this week:

On Tuesday, students are welcome to wear pyjamas and bring one small stuffy that fits in their backpack. We will be having a movie celebration, as requested by the students. Current movie options include The Minecraft Movie, The Emoji Movie, Despicable Me 4, Sonic 3, The Wild Robot, Swapped, and Hoppers. Students will vote on Monday. Please let me know if you have concerns about any of these movies. I will also likely provide popcorn for the class, so please reach out if there are any allergy or dietary concerns.

We have also been learning about fractions in math, and students will be making vanilla brownies together this week to connect fractions to real-life cooking. Students will have an opportunity to try the brownies, so please let me know about any allergy concerns.

Finally, on Wednesday, weather permitting, we will be participating in a land-based learning walk with our Indigenous Elder, Hal Eagletail. This activity will take most of the morning, so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and has a water bottle to bring along.

Thank you for taking the time to read through these updates!

Looking Back:

Literacy:

We had fun with writing on Monday as students responded to a picture of the day prompt. On Tuesday, we enjoyed visiting our kindergarten buddy class, where students had the opportunity to watch, play with, and engage with their ducks. We sketched the ducks alongside our kindergarten friends and then returned to the classroom to begin creating comic strips about the adventures of Blackberry, Lemonade, and Caramel.

We also began learning about autobiographies, and students were introduced to their new project: creating an “Autobiography Island.” More information about this exciting project will be shared over the next week or so.

Don’t forget to ask your child about the latest developments in our novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class!

Math:

We explored fractions in more detail this week. Students learned about fractions on a number line and were introduced to fraction strips. Using manipulatives, they practiced identifying equivalent and inequivalent fractions and comparing different fractions to one another.

Ask your child to show you how they can use fraction strips or a number line to compare fractions and explain which fractions are equivalent.

See the note above about our “Delicious Fractions” activity next week! We are planning for it to take place on Thursday as a fun way to wrap up our fraction unit.

Science:

With swimming lessons taking up part of our schedule, we spent a little less time on science this week. However, students still enjoyed a visit to Princess and Pirate Park, where they participated in a fun and active Food Chain game.

Social Studies:

We continued working on our community projects this week. Students have been doing an amazing job with their planning, budgeting, and teamwork. Many groups have now started building their projects, and we are hoping to have most completed by the end of next week. Swimming lessons have shortened some of our work periods, but students have continued to make great progress.

Buddies:

We had a wonderful time connecting with our buddy classes this week! Students proudly shared their Circle Stories with our Grade 1 buddies and even taught them a little bit about Scratch programming. They also enjoyed spending time with our kindergarten buddies, where they had the chance to play with and learn about their classroom ducks.

Looking Ahead:

We will no longer be needing the jars, I have not received enough so I went in another direction.  Thank you so much to those who brought them in.  I will return them to your child.

MTS Reminders - May 25-29, 2026

Bus Registration for 2026-27 School Year

Transportation Registration is now available through your CBE Account.

Families must register each year if they require busing for their student.

Families must register by Sunday, June 14, 2026 for students to be added to routes for the start of the next school year.

CBE will accept registrations after the deadline; however, students are added to the closest existing bus stop with available space. Processing times for registrations submitted after the June 14 deadline will be delayed.

Confirmed routes are posted in August. For those who register after the June 14 deadline, it may take until mid-October before your child is able to ride the bus.

Transportation can be cancelled with no financial impact by submitting the cancellation form by Sept. 30, 2026. Fees will be added to accounts in October 2026.

Food Support

Did you know that the Breakfast Club of Canada has shared research demonstrating that 40% of Alberta’s children experience food insecurity?  This means that 4 out of 10 children do not have access to food when they are hungry.

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.

Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
