Week of June 19, 2026

Looking Back:

Literacy:

This week, we wrapped up our Autobiography Island projects and created our bobble heads. We also began an exciting new unit on myths and legends!

Students explored the similarities and differences between myths and legends and started a triple Venn diagram to compare and contrast Hercules, Moana, and Brave. As we watched each movie, we identified characteristics of myths and legends and recorded evidence to support our thinking. We have begun filling in the third section of our Venn diagram with examples from Brave and will continue watching and analyzing the movie next week.

Math:

This week, we started our graphing unit and had lots of fun collecting, organizing, and analyzing data! Students learned about observations, surveys, and measurements, as well as the difference between first-hand and second-hand data.

We explored tally charts, dot plots, line plots, bar graphs, pictographs, and pie charts by graphing our favourite animals, ice cream toppings, sports teams, after-school activities, pancake toppings, and book genres. Learning was made even more exciting through hands-on activities and taste tests!

Students also completed an assessment on Thursday. Most students have a strong understanding of graphing concepts, while some are continuing to practice creating accurate tally charts.

One of our favourite graphing activities was voting on our favourite "Cooking with Coleman" experience. Students chose from bannock, ice cream, brownies, pancakes, and butter. The winner was... making butter! 🧈

We will finish up our graphing unit next week.

Science/Social Studies:

This week, we learned about the parts of a flower and the important role pollination plays in helping plants reproduce. While we have introduced these concepts, students will continue to build on this learning in Grade 4. Much of our science work has been completed independently and can be found in Google Classroom.

We also reflected on our herb-growing experiment. Unfortunately, our seeds did not grow as planned, and we joked that we had successfully grown... dirt! Whether it was the seeds, the soil, or a combination of both, our experiment became a great learning opportunity about how not every scientific investigation turns out as expected. A huge thank you to one of our class families who generously donated plants for students to replant and take home. Your kindness helped turn our "jar of dirt" moment into a successful gardening experience!

On Friday, we celebrated the Summer Solstice (which officially occurs on Sunday). All of the Grade 3 classes gathered together to learn about the significance of the longest day of the year and to reflect on the changing season as we prepare for new adventures ahead.

Our Final Week of Grade 3!

To celebrate a fantastic year together, we have some fun activities planned for our last week:

Monday: Kickball (weather permitting) or an extra Free Time Friday-style activity indoors
Tuesday: Drawing and colouring with our Kindergarten buddies
Wednesday: Pajama Day and a dance party
Thursday: Sports Day (Wear red and White for Team Canada) and a games afternoon (students may bring a favourite board game to share)
Friday: Show and Tell! Students have been asking all year, and the final day has finally arrived!

We are looking forward to making some wonderful memories together during our last week of Grade 3!

We will have a wonderful last week together!

Looking Ahead:

I have sent home a paper in students' backpacks of missing library books. Please return these books as soon as possible.  Thanks!

MTS Reminders - June 15-19, 2026

Bus Registration for 2026-27 School Year

Today is the deadline date for registering for transportation.

Families must register each year if they require a bus for their student through their CBE Account.

CBE will accept registrations after the deadline; however, students are added to the closest existing bus stop with available space. Processing times for registrations submitted after the June 14 deadline will be delayed.

Confirmed routes are posted in August. For those who register after the June 14 deadline, it may take until mid-October before your child is able to ride the bus.

Transportation can be cancelled with no financial impact by submitting the cancellation form by Sept. 30, 2026. Fees will be added to accounts in October 2026.

NEW Scooter Rack at MTS!!!

We are excited to receive a new scooter rack at McKenzie Towne School.

Last year, a grade 2 student wrote a letter to Dr. Slater and Mrs. Woodrow asking if the school could have a scooter rack. The letter was shared with Parent Council and last week, the new rack was installed!!

Thank you to Parent Council and a big thank you to Nigell!!
